It's San Francisco, and the year is 2137. After war and disease threatened the great country of the USA, the Government turned the cities into havens of peace and security, the cost - absolute obedience.
Over the last hundred and twenty-seven years several laws have been passed giving the Government greater control over the people. There are restrictions on what vids they watch, what books they can read, in order to weed out the ‘corrupting’ elements. Children are given specialized educations in order to properly prepare them for their ‘place’.
Because when they come of age, the Government matches them with a husband or wife based on their genetics in order to maintain a healthy, balanced and diverse population. The women are expected to maintain the home, raise their children and run the household while the men work hard.
Men are given more freedom than women, and are permitted to attend University. Unwed women must stay at the Academy until they are wed, and are expected to be virgins on their wedding night. Any women found to have strayed will be sent to the camps. Once married however, women are free to travel throughout the city as they wish.
There is no divorce. There is no choice. Just the law.
For those who choose to break the law, there is only one punishment. Whether they steal, murder, cheat on their spouse or refuse their marriage, there is only one punishment. They’re sent to the Alcatraz Rehabilitation Center for ‘re-indoctrination’. Failing that, they will be sterilized and tattooed with a barcode on their inner arm and sent to live in the Camps.
The camps are not policed, but there is very little outside to help them survive. The city borders however are strictly patrolled, stopping the Coders from entering unauthorized and ensuring the safety of those within.
Coders can work menial jobs in the city, but their movements are strictly policed. They live harsh lives back in the Camps, with the bare minimum needed to survive, and Coders are forced to live in shanty towns. There is little work to be found in the camps, and the only chance to trade with the city dwellers is on market day. If they wish to attempt to re-enter city society, they must attend classes, and if they pass their tattoos will be removed and their sterilization will be reversed.
